Working is a professional development series for artists, built to equip attendees with project management skills, industry specific knowledge and out-of-the-box tools to advance their careers. Each session focuses on a different aspect of the administrative side of being an artist. From project management to fundraising, compliance, and storytelling, we’ll talk about the business of being an artist. Join us every third Wednesday from January to May to learn and share with industry professionals and artists at all stages of their careers.

      Wednesday, April 15, Compliance
Being an artist means running your own business. And being in business means having insurance and filing taxes. This session will look at the basics for being an artist in legal terms; fiscal management, tax compliance, and liability insurance.ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jacquelin Walker, an Associate at Strassburger McKenna Gutnick & Gefsky, serves in the Media and Entertainment, Business Services and Public/Non-Profit and Education practice areas. Walker’s experience working with small businesses, large corporations, and public entities, like the University of Pittsburgh, the Harry Walker Agency (HWA), and Creative Artists Agency (CAA) inform her law practice, blending risk assessment, negotiation, and sales with clear analysis of the law to find solutions that strengthen client business and advocate for client needs.

Walker is a cultural producer, yoga instructor, and advocate for equity in the arts and entertainment sectors. She has served as a mentor and instructor for Ghetto Film School and an events manager for Blackhouse Foundation, both in New York. Walker’s cultural production practice, Fete-Fete Ltd., supports visual artists, filmmakers, performers, and culinary artists by providing a platform to reach new audiences and collaborators. An alumna of YogaRoots on Location (200 hour YTT), Walker leads yoga classes around Pittsburgh and beyond, rooting her anti-racist and trauma- informed practice in joy, rest, and leisure, sharing tools that help others create self-awareness with an eye toward individual and collective healing and expansion.

Walker is a Pittsburgh native residing in Garfield.Check out these additional Working sessions…
